03 - The Royal Tenenbaums
“Of Course It’s Dark, It’s a Suicide Note.”
My favorite movie of all time. No description necessary.
- Richie’s suicide attempt in The Royal Tenenbaums.
- Oh man, when Charlie died on LOST. After that, the show had a severe drop off.
- The woodchipper scene in Fargo.
- The paintball episodes in season 2 of Community.
- When people expect GOB to do things in his sixty-three thousand dollar suit. C’mon!
- When you find out what Hank and Dean are in The Venture Brothers.
You know, I’ve always said that when I get a tattoo, it’s going to be that drawing of Richie releasing Mordecai.

I mean, not of the whole thing, but you get the point.
So, Richie. My second favorite character from the film.
It’s no surprise that he has an infatuation with his adopted sister, Margot. Growing up in a family full of motivated individuals, Richie seemed like he was the most sensitive. Chaz, like his father (and Chaz hates that fact), was a lot more business oriented. His mother enrolled the children in various classes that appealed to a higher class. But Richie didn’t want that. He’s a sweet, emotional boy. Oh, and he’s also incredibly impressionable.
He takes an attempt at art in order to impress the more artistic Margot, although he does seem to fail miserably. Still, his competitive father takes an interest in his tennis playing. The Baumer was very good, but apparently not too attached to the game. Even after his tournament loss due to an emotional wreck, you don’t really see any sign of him actually missing the game. In fact, he cares more about the fact that his father seemed to stop caring for him after he lost that match.
Richie’s a tragic character. He craves that loving family that we always hear about. He’s infatuated with his adopted sister. Even after finding out that she’s unfaithful to her husband, his whole perception of her is destroyed and he cracks.
Still, when the dust settles and Mordecai returns… we see a much happier Richie who realizes after his suicide attempt, that he does have the family that cares for him and the woman he could never have.
Sorry, scattered. I could go on for pages but had to edit this down.
